The spec score shows how a device’s published specs compare with the other devices in its category. It runs from 0 to 100, and the category average sits near 50. It is a comparison of specs, not a test or a review: we don’t measure how well a device works.
How it’s worked out
- We take each yes/no or numeric spec where better has a clear direction, such as more suction or lower standby power.
- A device earns the share of the other devices it beats on that spec. A tie counts as half.
- Specs are grouped into areas such as Cleaning or Integrations, and each area is the average of its specs.
- The score is the average of the areas, so an area with many specs doesn’t outweigh one with few.
What it leaves out
- Unknown specs. A “?” is skipped, never counted as a no.
- Specs without a clear better or worse, such as the type of mop or the install method.
- Specs where fewer than 3 devices have a sourced value, or where every device is the same.
- Price, Amazon ratings and affiliate commission. None of them changes a score.
When there’s no score
A device needs sourced values for at least 50% of the specs that count, in at least 2 areas, and a category needs at least 3 scored devices. Otherwise we show no score rather than a shaky one.
Scores are relative, so one can move when we add a device to the category or confirm a missing spec. Scores from different categories can’t be compared.
